Why oxygen matters
Oxygen is the end of the line: it takes what the chain passes down and turns into water. No oxygen, and the chain backs up and stops.

Cells burn sugar in three stages, and oxygen at the end keeps the biggest one running.
4.3 Making ATP
Cellular respiration turns the energy stored in sugar into ATP, the small molecule every cell runs on. Respiration runs in three stages: glycolysis splits the sugar, the Krebs cycle pulls out its energy, and the electron transport chain turns that energy into ATP.
That last stage, the chain, makes most of the ATP. Proteins in the mitochondria, the cell's power stations, pass the energy down the chain like a bucket brigade, and the final step uses it to build ATP.
Oxygen waits at the very end to take what has been passed down, and turns into water. Without oxygen the chain backs up and stops, and ATP output collapses.
